Who isn’t instantly smitten by those miniature gray tanks, better known as olive ridley hatchlings? These sea turtles face increasing odds for survival as an eclectic handful of concerned people fight for the turtles’ rightful place along the pristine Playa San Miguel, Costa Rica.
The following video summarizes the olive ridleys’ story.

Thank you so much for visiting my blog and for actually reading the post! Watching those little tanks of energy scuttle to the ocean touches even the most hardened souls! Hopefully I’ll be able to spend some time in CR during the nesting season, which starts soon and goes through December.
If so, there will be new posts about the turtles!

I do hope that with help and protection the turtles can grow in numbers. They’re such beautiful creatures.

Thanks for your comment; the leatherback turtle nests there every so often, though I have never seen one. The biologists are always thrilled when that happens!
I fear that protection will slow down the decline, but stopping the nightly raids is frustrating; when the patrols are on one end, the thieves are on the other. The shrimpers continue to trawl with illegal nets, and most front-line homeowners don’t use the red-lights. Those few rare uninhabited beaches are the remaining treasures, though I fear those are vanishing as well. The municipality doesn’t seem to value their vanishing-natural resource!
I respect those biologists and volunteers who brave the rain and late-night vigils. Yes, we can hope!
